KindScore is open to everyone - just head to betravelkind.com/kindscore to try it out, completely for free.

What is KindScore?

Our ultimate goal is to make it easier for everyone to make conscious travel decisions, because we believe that everyone making simple, better choices when they travel will make a big difference to the world we share.

KindScore is our first interactive tool to help anyone make informed decisions about their travel activities. You simply paste or describe a travel activity, and in seconds you have an overall rating from “Terrible” to “Excellent”, plus a full breakdown of the activity’s pros and cons for people, animals and the planet. Every point on a KindScore rating has a direct source or a search link, because we believe in transparency and letting people read more to deepen their understanding, if they choose to.

Why are we building KindScore?

When we visited Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, we were thankful to be at a genuinely ethical sanctuary where the tourist income actually supports elephants and local workers. But we found that there are plenty of other elephant attractions in Thailand who brand themselves as “ethical”, but once you start researching deeper you find a different story entirely.

It’s often difficult to know the impact of travel activities without taking a lot of time researching them. KindScore makes that simple.

Who is KindScore for?

KindScore is fundamentally built for anyone who loves to travel but wants to easily make informed choices about the activities they do, to minimise their negative impact and even to have a positive impact on the places they visit.

Right now we want to get KindScore into the hands of people who can help make a difference in the ethical travel space - particularly ethical, sustainable or mindful content creators and travel agents.

Is KindScore freely available to everyone?

Yes! KindScore is a completely free tool and we intend to keep it that way, to ensure there’s no barrier to making more ethical travel decisions.

Currently we limit you to running 5 KindScore ratings if you haven’t made an account, simply to ensure our own costs don’t get out of control without knowing how many real users we have. You can use KindScore without limits by creating a free account.

KindScore uses AI - is that bad?

We’d like to do a more in-depth blog post on this later, so for now we’re just providing a quick overview. The short answer in our view is - No, it’s not bad, because the decisions KindScore can help influence are vastly more impactful than the relatively tiny amount of energy and water usage per assessment.

We currently use Claude Haiku for the main assessment step, which is extremely low-impact compared to large models like Claude Opus or ChatGPT 5.5. Below is an estimate of impact from running a KindScore analysis. The numbers are rough - Anthropic doesn't publish per-model inference figures, and energy/water depend heavily on which data center and its energy mix:

What’s next?

Depending on the feedback we receive, we’ll be updating KindScore to be more useful for everyone. For example, we’re considering an easy “Comparison” view where you can compare multiple experiences directly.

KindScore isn’t the only tool we want to build to help people travel consciously. It’s specifically designed for rating travel experiences, but we’re very aware that hotels and transport are equally important in travel. Therefore we’re planning to work on more tools in future to address these areas.
